Our new Americas headquarters in Hillsboro, OR is found in the Great Pacific Northwest, just 20 minutes from the third largest city on the West Coast. Portland, located at the confluence of the Willamette River and the mighty Columbia River, started as an inland port, but has become so much more. Portland has many nicknames. It has often been called the “Rose City” because the flower grows abundantly throughout the area, or “Bridgetown” because of the many bridges that span the Willamette river in the downtown area. It is called “Brewtopia” by some because of the thriving microbrewing industry. And Portland has lately been called the “greenest” city in the US, making it an ideal hometown location for SolarWorld and for the people who are excited about rising to the challenge of growing the renewable resource industry in this country and throughout the world.
With a metropolitan area population of two million, Portland offers all the entertainment, cultural, and educational opportunities of most large cities. But it has a distinct quality-of-life advantage. Portland has been named among the best big cities in the USA time and again because of its unique features. From the now-famous slogan, “Keep Portland Weird” to the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, Portland offers a distinctive and outstanding quality of living that includes housing choices in metropolitan high-rise condos in the Pearl District, charming eastside bungalows, hillside living in the Northwest heights or residential suburban living in Beaverton or Hillsboro.
One of the major draws to the Portland area is the proximity to the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that abound in the Pacific Northwest. Portland is ideally situated halfway between the Cascade Mountains and the Pacific Coast. Within an hour, you may find yourself at one of Mount Hood’s five ski areas or walking the pristine beaches of the famously beautiful Oregon Coast. Whether you enjoy hiking, skiing, biking, windsurfing, fishing, climbing, running, rafting, surfing… or, just enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll, you are cradled in a nature lover’s paradise.
Excellent universities and educational institutions also make this area ideal for those interested in continuing education opportunities across a broad variety of disciplines. Local institutions include: Portland State University, Oregon Health Sciences University and Oregon Graduate Institute, George Fox University, Lewis & Clark University, University of Portland, Reed College, and the Microelectronics Program in Solar at Portland Community College.
